Spring Hill Urgent Care – Don’t let the flu ruin your New Year’s resolutions and plans!

flu shot spring hill

The Holiday Season is always full of joy, preparations, family reunions, and gingerbread cookies. Near Year’s resolutions kick in soon after but we all need to stay in a good health in order to make those resolutions materialize. However, for some people this season means dealing with the flu and its nagging symptoms, such as fatigue, chills, fever, sneezing, or body ache. Who would like to go through all that during one of the most beautiful seasons of the year? In today’s article, we are sharing some useful tips about several things you can do to avoid getting the flu, and enjoy a fruitful and prosperous start to 2018!

Get a flu shot in Spring Hill

The first thing you should definitely consider to prevent the flu is getting a flu shot. It is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control that everyone above the age of 6 months should get it. About two weeks after receiving the shot, your immune system will begin producing antibodies in the blood that are meant to give you protection against the types of flu viruses that were present in the shot. Please keep in mind that there are certain groups of people who are more at risk for getting a flu than others, e,g. pregnant women, anybody with chronic medical conditions (asthma, cancer, kidney disease, or HIV/Aids), people over 50 years of age, health care staff, Native Americans / Alaska Natives, etc.

If you are wondering where to get a flu shot in Spring Hill, swing by LifeGuard Urgent Care where we will give you the shot immediately.

Keep your environment clean

Whether or not you decide to get a flu shot in Spring Hill, there are a few other things you can do to avoid getting sick. One of them is keeping your environment clean. It doesn’t matter if it’s home, work, gym or school, below you will find a few examples of what you can do to make sure your surrounding is germfree:

  •     Make it a routine to disinfect those surfaces that are touched a lot;
  •     Get rid of any clutter that may collect dust and dirt;
  •     Clean keyboards, and phones;
  •     Sanitize your desk and doorknobs especially if you work with a person who is currently sick;
  •     If you work out, don’t use germy mats;

Clean your hands

Even though you can’t see them, there are hundreds of germs on your hands from touching things. You should wash your hands often and properly with soap for at least 20 seconds. This is important especially when you have contagious people around you who decided to come to work instead of recovering at home. If you don’t have time to constantly go to the bathroom to wash your hands, you can use an easier solution and purchase tiny hand sanitizers that will fit in your purse, or a backpack. Hand sanitizers come in many different scents and colors, and they make a perfect stocking filler!

Don’t get too close

There are some people who will never miss a day of work unless they are absolutely dying. Even the flu is not able to discourage them from coming in. Stay as far as possible from such co-workers because they are highly contagious and, as you may expect, they spread their virus. Try to avoid shaking people’s hands as they transfer tremendous amount of the flu germs.

Don’t wait until it’s too late!

We always educate our patients on a number of precautions they should take to avoid getting sick. There are many more things they can do to prevent the seasonal flu than mentioned in this article, such as: cover their mouth and nose, sip on some tea or natural juices, or get enough sleep, etc. Nevertheless, we strongly encourage everyone to get their flu shot in Spring Hill as soon as possible. That is definitely the very first step that should be taken to protect themselves.

Is a school physical exam absolutely necessary for kids?

Whether or not an annual school physical is required depends on state and school itself. Sometimes it’s your choice if your child will get his/her exam. Nevertheless, we strongly encourage all parents to set up an appointment for their offspring every year. It’s an opportunity for the parents to ensure their children are developing appropriately. Have no underlying health issues, and all their vaccines are updated. Bear in mind that schools in different states have different vaccination requirements. Besides, regular physical exams are a great way of building your child’s medical history.

Why do schools require annual physicals?

Those schools that require a school physical exam always want to make sure that the children are protected against any serious diseases that might be a threat to other students, their friends, etc.

What examinations are required by schools?

Each state has its own requirements as for the level of physical examIn Floridaeach yearstarting from kindergarten and finishing on the 12th grade, all students have to get a school physical exam. Even though there is no specific document that needs to be submitted, the state does recommend a School Entry Exam form that has to be filled out by the physicianIn Florida, students must also provide an immunization records while enrolling in the school.

The best time to schedule your child’s physical is before the next academic year begins. Most of our young patients who get their school physical exam in Spring Hill visit us in Summer. However, since some camps may require submitting your kids’ physical. We encourage you to set up an appointment for your children in Spring. Although don’t delay until the last month before school because that is the busiest period and slots tend to fill up very fast.

How to prepare your child for his/her school physical exam in Spring Hill?

First of all, talk to your child. Explain to them what does the exam look like (tell them about how the physician will check their eyes, ears, blood pressure, weight, height, etc.). Let them know about the immunizations they will receive. And finally ask them if they have been experiencing any pain or discomfort lately. And make sure to bring that up during the visit.  The more your child knows about the exam, the less stress the appointment will cause. Second of all, think whether you have noticed anything odd about your child’s health condition. List all the over-the-counter medications they are taking. And don’t forget to mention any changes in your family medical history to the doctor.

What’s the difference between school and sports physical?

The main difference between those two is their purpose. Sports physicals are mainly aimed at injury prevention. Moreover based on the results of the exam. The physician will determine whether or not a student is eligible to play a particular sport. Without risking any health issues related to heart, lungs, etc. Apart from evaluating overall health and ability to perform, our physician may also give you some tips on how to avoid getting injuredWhereas, school physicals, as mentioned before, focus on more issues than just a child’s capability of participating in sports.

Spring Hill Urgent Care – What are the most common job-related injuries? Part 1

Spring Hill Urgent Care first aid

Spring Hill Urgent Care – Regardless of who you are, an injured worker, an employer, an adjuster or a risk manager, you know very well that accidents at work are inevitable. Depending on what kind of a job an employee performs, the risk of getting injured varies. For example, a construction worker is far more at risk of falling from a high place than an office worker. Nevertheless, there are many common injuries and accidents that happen across all employment sectors. In today’s article, we are revealing some of the most common job-related injuries that we treat at our Spring Hill Urgent Care.

1.  Slips and falls

Employees who have slipped, tripped, or fallen at their workplace are types of patients we frequently see at our  Spring Hill Urgent Care. They usually hurt themselves by either slipping on the wet and slick floor, or tripping over something lying on it. It is very easy to avoid getting injured. That way simply by making sure that any spillages and leaks are immediately cleaned up. What is equally important is to keep drawers closed to ensure no one will trip over them. The same rule applies to cupboards. They should never be left open as in case any object inside of them falls out and ends up on the floor. This may then cause an employee to stumble over it.

2.  Overexertion

Those injuries result from an excessive physical effort related to lifting, pushing, bending, twisting, pulling, holding, or poor posture. Overexertion injuries most typically affect the wrist, neck, knee, ankle, groin, or shoulder. Learning about the proper lifting, carrying, or moving techniques may greatly decrease the risk of overexertion. Other factors contributing to those types of injuries are fatigue, workload and stress. Overexertion has been reported to be the most expensive workplace injury.

3.  Being hit by falling objects

Objects that either fall from shelves or are dropped by another employee often cause minor injuries such as cuts or abrasions. However, falling debris or collapsing structures may contribute to significant health injuries. These include: concussions, brain damage, paralysis, blindness, or even amputations. Our Spring Hill Urgent Care suggests several solutions to prevent such accidents. For instance, keep a clean worksite, use protective equipment, implement fences or barricades to keep employees out of fall zones, use nets to catch falling objects.

4.  Collisions and crashes

These are injuries which occur when workers get hurt in auto accidents. Such injuries may sometimes result in significant disability, loss of body parts, or amputations, and some of them are unfortunately even fatal. That is why it’s so important for the employer to implement safe driving policies to reduce the number of those accidents. Encouraging employees to do a Safe-Driver training course is another way to prevent such accidents.

5.  Walking into objects

These types of injuries are quite common. Many employees at some point happen to walk into an object like a door, window, table, chair, etc. Even though they don’t belong to the group of serious life-threatening injuries, they can definitely hurt. At Spring Hill Urgent Care, we are often visited by patients who ran into an object at work. As a result suffer from a head, neck, foot, or knee injury. Fortunately, it is very easy to prevent those types of injuries by keeping the work environment safe from any hazards that people can easily walk into. Another tip, which may seem mundane and obvious, is simply to stay alert and try not to wander absent-mindedly across the hallways too much.

At our Spring Hill Urgent Care, we accept workers’ compensation insurances and provide the best care to the patients who got hurt at work. We help them get on their feet as safely and as quickly as possible. Contact us today to find out more about our doctors. Walk-ins welcome!

Spring Hill Urgent Care: What are the most common asthma triggers?

asthma Spring Hill Urgent Care

Spring Hill Urgent Care – Asthma is a chronic health disease which causes breathing difficulties through excessive production of mucus, swelling, and narrowing in the lining of the airways which leads to the lungs receiving less air. If you experience coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, or fatigue during exercise, it’s possible that you have asthma. If that’s the case, don’t panic, you can control it! First of all, your doctor will prescribe you either quick-relief or long-term control medications, depending on the severity of your condition. Secondly, you should bear in mind that asthma attacks are always triggered by something. When you avoid that trigger, you automatically decrease the possibility of having an asthma episode. In this article, we describe a few of the most common asthma triggers and how to avoid them.

1. Allergens

Seems obvious yet so many people who visit our Spring Hill Urgent Care aren’t aware that their asthma attack was caused by contact with one of the allergens. Pollen, mold, dust mites, cockroaches, and even your beloved pet are only a few examples of the triggers that may cause your body’s immune response. Unfortunately, sometimes it’s not that easy to completely eliminate an allergen from your life, e.g. would you get rid of Buddy because it turns out that your newly married wife is allergic to him?

Nevertheless, there are some ways to limit your exposure to the allergens. Possible solutions are: keeping your pet outside / away from your bedroom, have your house dusted on a regular basis, try washing your sheets in hot water at least once a week, and keep garbage in closed containers. Those are just a couple possible ways to stay away from the allergens. Contact our Spring Hill Urgent Care physicians to get even more advice on this matter.

2.  Smoking

Smoking or being in a close proximity to a person who smokes extremely irritates your lungs’ airways. What’s more, using cigarettes may permanently damage your airways. If you are a smoker the best thing you can do for yourself is to quit right away. When is comes to passive smoking, you may either walk away from those who are smoking, or ask them not to smoke (which might be very challenging), or if they are your friends, politely instruct them to go outside.

3.  Weather

Believe it or not, changes in temperature and humidity may also contribute to your asthma episode. Cold and dry air that you inhale may cause lung inflammation. The best way to avoid weather-induced asthma attacks is to wrap your neck in a thick scarf that covers your mouth and nose while outside in cold weather, or if it’s hot weather that makes your asthma worse, do your best to stay in an air-conditioned place during the hot season.

4.  Stress

Stress is a factor that causes very severe asthma attacks. It is not quite certain what is the reason behind it, however, some physicians believe that stress causes constriction of the muscles in the airways that reside within the lungs and as a result they tighten up triggering chest tightness in people with asthma. Don’t let stress overwhelm you and control your life – try breathing exercises or meditating which may help you relax and calm down. Another solution is talking to a friend or someone who you trust and simply vent. Don’t let the frustrations accumulate in you and weigh you down. Our professional medical team at Spring Hill Urgent Care is ready to help you out and give you some tips on how to deal with stress.

5. Exercise

Physical activity is important for everyone’s health, nonetheless, there are some sports that may trigger an asthma attack. When you work out, your body requires more oxygen and therefore forces you to breathe faster which could cause exercise-induced asthma (EIA). How is that possible? When you breathe slowly the air you inhale is warmed and moistened by your respiratory system and upper airways, however, when you start breathing faster, you most probably inhale air through your mouth which is cooler and drier. What you can implement to minimize the symptoms is to always do a short warm up before you start your exercise, try to breathe through your nose at all times while working out, try not to overdo yourself during strenuous exercise which is the easiest way to trigger an asthma attack.

Simple, Upfront Urgent Care Pricing leads to No Unwelcome Surprises

Spring Hill Urgent Care

We have all seen the rapid increase in the number of urgent care centers over the last decade. They all look very similar on the outside – big signage, a medical logo, and claims about how quick and affordable they are.

However, what most people don’t realize is that not all urgent care centers are the same. If we look closer – where it matters – on the INSIDE – then we start to see some big differences.

A clear, upfront Spring Hill urgent care pricing model

One of the major differences between urgent care centers is the pricing model. Some urgent care centers seem very cheap – at least on first impressions. Patients are led to believe that the price will be minimal, then suddenly at the end of their appointment they are confronted with a huge bill.l1

Spring Hill urgent care – Lifeguard Urgent Care, however, is different. We believe in an honest, transparent pricing policy. We tell patients upfront how much their bill will be, which avoids any unwelcome surprises. Afterall, isn’t that the way it should be? You don’t go to the supermarket and choose items with no prices: The store clearly labels the price, so that you know how much each item is. We believe that urgent care should be the same: The patient should always know how much they are paying for each service.

In fact, we are so open about our pricing, that we even publish it on our website. Specifically, we charge the following rates at the Spring Hill Urgent Care Centre:

  • $15 Flu Shots
  • $85 Standard Office Visit
  • $129 Office Visit w/additional procedure (X-ray, etc.)
  • $249 Office Visit w/additional procedure (X-ray, etc.) and stitches/staples

So next time you are choosing a Spring Hill Urgent Care center – in order to avoid any unwelcome surprises – be careful and be sure to choose a center with a clear and transparent pricing policy.

How to prevent heat exhaustion

Heat exhaustion can occur when your body gets too warm, which can happen quickly if you exert yourself in hot weather. It can be serious, and can cause heat stroke. It’s important to recognize the symptoms of heat exhaustion and take steps to cool down and replenish body fluids before heat stroke sets in. Heat stroke can be deadly.

When experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion, get out of the heat (if you can’t get into an air-conditioned room, find shade in the coolest place possible).

Sit in front of a fan or use cool compresses to cool down. It’s also important to rest. Drink plenty of fluids – but avoid alcohol and caffeine. Take a cool shower or bath if possible. If these cooling methods don’t relieve the symptoms of heat exhaustion after 15 minutes, seek emergency medical help. If untreated, heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke.

Following are some quick tips for avoiding heat exhaustion:

  • Wear light-color, loose-fitting clothing – Dark or tight-fitting clothing holds in heat and makes your body warmer.
  • Find someplace cool – Get into an air-conditioned room if possible; if not, find some shade. Being in a cooler place even for a short time can lower your risk of heat exhaustion.
  • Drink lots of liquids, but no alcohol – Caffeine is also not recommended. Many sodas contain caffeine so, if possible, find a caffeine-free beverage. If a cold soda with caffeine is all you have, it’s better than nothing.
  • Find out if any of your medications may make you more susceptible to heat exhaustion – Ask your doctor or pharmacists
  • Take time to get used to the heat – Give your body time to adjust to the heat, especially before exercising or doing physical labor.
